World Anaesthesiologists Federation Launches Global ICU Care Training
The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists has launched a new global training initiative designed to strengthen intensive care unit care for clinicians working in resource-limited settings. The programme aims to equip doctors and other healthcare professionals with practical, evidence-based skills to improve patient outcomes and support recovery in hospitals that face significant constraints on equipment, staffing and supplies.
The initiative forms part of the WFSA's longstanding mission to improve the standard of anaesthesia and perioperative medicine worldwide, with a particular emphasis on supporting healthcare systems in lower-income countries. The federation has a history of delivering its flagship Safer Anaesthesia From Education courses globally, and this new ICU-focused programme represents an expansion of that educational footprint into critical care settings.
The federation has also recently opened fellowship posts for the coming year, including up to three 12-month paediatric anaesthesia fellowships in Nairobi, Kenya, and two posts in Lusaka, Zambia, starting in September and October 2026. These fellowships offer clinical training at major teaching hospitals with multidisciplinary and international teaching teams, targeting qualified anaesthetists and intensivists from WFSA member societies.
The WFSA represents the global anaesthesia profession through a federation of national societies in 156 countries, with membership exceeding 500,000 anaesthesiologists worldwide. The organisation holds Non-State Actor status in Official Liaison with the World Health Organization and consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
