Threats and opportunities of Brexit
As the UK’s largest travel association, representing both leisure and business travel organisers, ABTA speaks for the interests of both the industry and its customers, the travelling public. In advance of the EU Referendum of 2016 ABTA published, together with Deloitte, a report on what leaving the EU might entail for the travel industry, and for travellers. The report identified a number of critical commercial, regulatory and practical issues that would need to be addressed in the event of Brexit. Since the referendum result ABTA has been working with Departments within Whitehall, with the EU institutions in Brussels, and directly with destination EU countries to make sure that issues to do with connectivity and business continuity are prioritised in the negotiating process, and that the important contribution that tourism makes to the economies of both UK and EU destinations is not jeopardised in the medium term. Many of the consumer protections in travel originate from EU regulation; while these protections are seen as generally positive by travel industry, ABTA is examining whether departure from the EU might present opportunities for regulatory fine-tuning to suit the particular characteristics of the UK market.
