Simon McWhirter appointed UKGBC chief executive to accelerate green building leadership
Simon McWhirter has stepped into the role of Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), succeeding Smith Mordak, who held the position for a brief period. McWhirter, previously the Deputy Chief Executive, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to sustainability, making him a fitting leader for UKGBC at this critical juncture in the built environment's evolution.
Judith Everett, Chair of UKGBC, underscored McWhirter's strong connections across the built environment sector and his integral role since the organisation's inception 18 years ago. "Simon brings strong relationships across the built environment sector, government and our partners, attuned to the nature and climate crises we face," she stated. Her confidence in McWhirter's leadership appears well-placed, as he is positioned to navigate the complexities of current political and economic upheaval, enabling UKGBC to provide clarity and constructive guidance for stakeholders in both government and industry.
In his remarks regarding his new appointment, McWhirter expressed enthusiasm about leading UKGBC at such a pivotal time. He noted the potential for the built environment to significantly contribute to sustainable outcomes, stating, “With the current backdrop of political and economic upheaval, UKGBC is exceptionally well positioned to help bring clarity, certainty and a wealth of positive solutions.” This perspective is crucial as the organisation aims to influence how spaces are designed and constructed, ensuring they are not only environmentally sustainable but also enriching for communities.
McWhirter's extensive background spans not just his tenure at UKGBC but also includes influential roles in several key organisations focused on sustainability and decarbonisation. He recently co-chaired the Built Environment Taskforce at the Climate Action Coalition alongside Chris Skidmore, an initiative aimed at overcoming policy-related challenges to achieve the objectives set out by the Paris Agreement. The taskforce works to unify various stakeholders, including businesses and research institutions, driving forward the agenda for emissions reduction and the development of clearer international standards.
Additionally, McWhirter's expertise extends to his recent appointment to the Board of the National Retrofit Hub. This is particularly timely, given the pressing need for retrofitting within the UK’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions. He has highlighted that retrofitting homes at scale and speed is vital for both addressing climate challenges and stimulating the green economy. Lynne Sullivan, Chair of the National Retrofit Hub Board, has recognised McWhirter's proactive approach and valuable insights across the industry, which will undoubtedly support the Hub’s ambitious goals.
There remains an urgent dialogue around the UK's built environment as policymakers and industry leaders grapple with strategies to tackle the climate crisis effectively. As UKGBC embarks on this new chapter under McWhirter's stewardship, there is a collective expectation that the organisation will spearhead innovative solutions while fostering collaboration across sectors to transform communities into sustainable havens that truly resonate with today's environmental imperatives.
The coming years will undoubtedly test McWhirter’s leadership as he steers UKGBC towards fulfilling its mission during a time of both unprecedented challenges and opportunities for change in the construction and property development sectors.
