SBTi and CAFA join forces to boost corporate climate action
In a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing sustainability protocols within industry sectors, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has teamed up with Climate Action for Associations (CAFA). This partnership seeks to expedite corporate climate action by providing global trade associations with access to science-based targets (SBTs), which are crucial for emissions reduction initiatives.
The announcement of the partnership comes at a pivotal time as organisations strive to adapt to the escalating pressures of environmental accountability. The SBTi is renowned for its expertise in formulating scientifically-grounded emissions reduction targets, while CAFA boasts a vast international network and a focus on membership organisations. Together, they aim to educate and empower associations, particularly in high-impact industries such as Buildings, Steel, and Concrete.
Tracy Wyman, Chief Impact Officer at SBTi, underlined the unique advantages of this collaboration, noting the influential role industry associations play in driving collective change. "Industry associations are uniquely positioned to influence and drive change across entire industries. Through the SBTi’s partnership with CAFA, we are committed to supporting their efforts in educating associations and their members on how to set science-based targets and make meaningful contributions to global climate goals. This collaboration marks an exciting and significant step forward in our mission to make science-based corporate climate action the norm," Wyman stated.
As part of their initiative, CAFA will integrate obligations related to science-based targets into a series of outreach programmes, workshops, and webinars. This approach is expected to raise awareness among associations about the urgent necessity of setting and pursuing ambitious yet attainable climate goals.
“I am thrilled to partner with SBTi to bring science-based corporate climate action to the heart of the association sector and our work with membership organisations," said Alison Heppenstall, CAFA’s Founder and CEO. "Using the collaboration we’ll look to scale up our impact, including making sure associations provide their members access to the latest guidance on setting and achieving emissions reduction targets aligned with what the science says is required.”
The partnership signifies a coherent alignment of both organisations' missions, striving towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral global economy. By focusing on sectors characterised by high emissions, this collaboration is positioned to make a meaningful impact across various industries.
Trade associations that engage in this initiative will benefit from enhanced resources and guidance on implementing effective emissions reduction strategies, thereby playing a pivotal role in the broader context of the climate crisis. As the pressure for companies to demonstrate tangible results in their climate commitments escalates, the expertise offered through this partnership may represent a crucial step in fostering industry-wide accountability and action.
In summation, the collaboration between SBTi and CAFA holds promising potential for advancing corporate climate responsibility amongst trade associations. By promoting an understanding of science-based targets and making such information readily accessible, this effort could significantly contribute to the overall transition towards a sustainable, net-zero economy.
