RICS Brings First Global AI Standard for Surveyors into Effect
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) brought its first global professional standard for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in surveying practice into effect on 9 March 2026, making compliance mandatory for all members and regulated firms worldwide.
The standard addresses the growing integration of AI across valuation, construction, infrastructure, and land services, setting out both mandatory requirements and recommended best practice. Key obligations include maintaining sufficient knowledge of AI systems to support their responsible use, implementing policies around data usage, risk management and system governance, and ensuring adequate professional oversight of AI outputs that have a material impact on the delivery of surveying services. Members must also notify clients in writing where AI is used in service delivery, including whether clients have the option to opt out.
RICS-regulated firms are required to develop and implement responsible AI use policies informed by a risk register, covering data governance, system reliability and accountability. The standard was developed in collaboration with practitioners and published in September 2025 following a consultation period, with March set as the implementation date to allow firms time to prepare.
RICS described its approach as balanced — supportive of AI's potential to drive the profession forward, while acknowledging the professional and commercial risks of mismanagement. Full details and supporting materials are available on the RICS website.
