Niall Cotton appointed interim chief executive of FTA Ireland
The Freight Transport Association Ireland (FTA Ireland), a leading trade body representing the logistics sector across the country, has announced the appointment of Niall Cotton as its new interim Chief Executive. This appointment comes as the association prepares to bid farewell to Aidan Flynn, who is leaving after 14 years of dedicated service.
Niall Cotton, a founding member of FTA Ireland, has been deeply involved in the organisation since its establishment in 2010, serving both as President and Director. With two decades of extensive experience in senior management roles encompassing logistics, operations, and commerce, Cotton is particularly noted for his focus on safety and compliance within the haulage industry. Notably, he was integral to the development of the Trucksafe programme, a key initiative designed to promote operational excellence and reinforce safety standards in the sector.
Reflecting on the transition, Cotton acknowledged Flynn’s significant impact on FTA Ireland’s development. Speaking to Business Plus, he said, “Aidan’s leadership of FTA Ireland has been transformational, giving our industry a strong voice in the corridors of power and helping to drive the policy agendas that affect those that deliver for Ireland, from skills development to compliance.” He also highlighted Flynn’s critical work in establishing apprenticeship programmes, which have laid the foundation for future talent recruitment in the industry.
Cotton expressed optimism about the organisation’s future, noting, “Thanks to his leadership and vision, the organisation is in a great place from which to build and develop the status and reputation of our industry, ensuring that policymakers know how our sector can help to drive the economy forwards.” He concluded, “On behalf of our members, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for all his efforts – I look forward to building on his legacy with the staff and members of the association in the coming months while the board works to find a permanent replacement.”
Established as a critical voice for Ireland’s transport and logistics sectors, FTA Ireland offers members vital resources, training, and advocacy services. The association’s mission is to “inspire, advocate, and endorse safe, efficient, and sustainable transport operations and supply chains.” One of the organisation’s core roles is to support members through navigating regulatory requirements, improving operational efficiencies, and encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices within the industry.
Over the years, FTA Ireland has played an influential role in shaping the logistics landscape in Ireland, particularly in enhancing workforce development and operational standards. The association’s apprenticeship initiatives have been among its standout contributions, addressing industry skills shortages and future-proofing the sector.
Aidan Flynn’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for FTA Ireland. His tenure saw the organisation evolve into a respected and authoritative body that effectively represents the interests of freight transport professionals and businesses at national and policy levels.
As Niall Cotton steps into the interim Chief Executive role, stakeholders in the logistics industry will be watching closely to see how the association continues to deliver value to its members and influence the broader transport ecosystem in Ireland. The forthcoming period will be pivotal as FTA Ireland seeks to build on its legacy and identify a permanent successor to lead the organisation into the future.
