IHE partners with SPL to enhance sustainable practices in highway maintenance
The Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) has recently announced a new Professional Development Partnership (PDP) with Stabilised Pavements Limited (SPL), solidifying its commitment to sustainable practices in highway maintenance. This collaboration marks a significant step in enhancing professional development within the sector, leveraging SPL's extensive expertise as the UK’s largest in-situ road recycling company.
Established for over two decades, SPL has been a pioneer in the implementation of innovative in-situ recycling and stabilisation techniques. These methods are designed to provide cost-effective and durable solutions for addressing failing road infrastructure, while also prioritising environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and promoting the reuse of materials. The IHE's partnership with SPL will facilitate mutual support and recognition, aimed at driving best practices in highway maintenance.
In addition to the new partnership with SPL, the IHE has confirmed the renewal of its existing PDP with the Local Councils Road Innovation Group (LCRIG). This renewed collaboration underscores a shared commitment to professional development and knowledge exchange within the highways sector. Initiated in July 2022, the PDP between LCRIG and IHE has led to various initiatives focused on mutual promotion, event participation, and engagement within the industry.
Paula Claytonsmith, chief executive of LCRIG, expressed her enthusiasm over the renewal by stating, “We are delighted to formally renew our partnership with IHE and look forward to further strengthening our collaboration. The PDP enables us to continue creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and professional development within the highways community.”
Lyle Andrew, chief executive of IHE, also commented on the significance of this renewed agreement, saying, “It’s great news that we renew our PDP agreement with LCRIG. The partnership sees ongoing mutual benefits for both organisations including the sharing of reports and publications as well as the promotion of industry training and general upskilling of engineers and others active in the field of highways and transportation.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration in supporting practitioners, enhancing skills, and driving innovation within the sector.
Both partnerships serve as platforms for supporting professional development and fostering innovation in highway maintenance practices. By engaging in collective initiatives, the IHE and its partners aim to provide valuable resources and training opportunities for professionals in the field. This not only enhances individual skillsets but also contributes to the overall improvement of industry standards.
The initiatives undertaken through these Professional Development Partnerships aim to facilitate growth and innovation in highway engineering, while addressing key issues such as sustainability and material efficiency. As these collaborations evolve, they are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of the highways and transportation sector.
