Hilton Campbell takes the helm at AMHSA amid AI and digital transformation

With 27 years in intralogistics, Hilton Campbell has been elected President of AMHSA for a two-year term, aiming to drive innovation, inclusivity, and growth as AI and digital technologies reshape the automated material handling sector

At the recent Annual General Meeting, members of the Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA) elected Hilton Campbell as their new President. With a robust background spanning 27 years in the intralogistics industry, Campbell steps into this crucial role for a two-year term, bringing a wealth of experience that promises to be pivotal for the association and its members.

Campbell's journey in the industry is impressive, having served as the Managing Director of Interroll UK since 2019. He previously led Interroll’s operations in South Africa, where he established himself as a dynamic leader in a region with growing investment in material handling systems. His appointment as President coincides with a transformative period for the sector, particularly as the adoption of artificial intelligence and increased digitalisation reshape how businesses operate. Hilton remarked, “I’m delighted and honoured to become AMHSA President at an exciting time for the automated material handling sector,” emphasising his commitment to innovation and membership growth within AMHSA.

His strategic vision aims to address the evolving needs of the automated material handling industry. Many businesses today grapple with the challenges and opportunities presented by rapid technological advances. Emphasising inclusivity, Campbell noted that members of all sizes have a critical role in adapting to these shifts, especially as AI and environmental initiatives become more prominent. This view aligns seamlessly with AMHSA’s mission, which is grounded in its Four Pillars of Training, Quality, Promotion, and Networking.

Established in 1990, AMHSA has become the collective voice of the automated material handling sector, representing over 60 leading companies. Amidst global shifts, the association is committed to fostering professional development and promoting excellence in automation practices. Campbell’s leadership is expected to bolster these efforts, particularly in the realms of collaboration and knowledge-sharing among members—both established and emerging.

The significance of AMHSA within the industry is underscored by the valued resources it provides. Many members, including high-profile companies, see AMHSA as the starting point for enhancing their automation strategies. Campbell’s assertion that “today’s modular, scalable automation solutions enable firms to start small and scale up based on their evolving business needs” reflects a nuanced understanding of the industry's landscape, where flexibility and adaptability are essential.

In previous roles, Campbell has demonstrated a flair for innovation that resonates with AMHSA's ethos. Not only has he led significant operational transformations, but he has also been a vocal advocate for best practices in supply chain and distribution, frequently speaking at prominent events globally. His experience positions him well to mentor emerging leaders within AMHSA, potentially inspiring a new generation of industry professionals committed to excellence.

Away from his professional commitments, Campbell values time with family and friends, engaging in local customs such as Braai—South African barbecuing—and enjoying leisure activities like golf. This blend of personal and professional life underlines his belief in building strong relationships, which will be integral as he fosters community among AMHSA’s members.

As AMHSA embarks on this new chapter under Campbell's leadership, the association stands poised to not only navigate the complexities of the evolving landscape but also to influence the future of automated material handling systems. His tenure as President promises to be marked by a strong focus on innovation, member engagement, and the sustainable growth of the sector.
