European Music Educators Gather in Vienna on Democracy in Education
The European Association for Music in Schools held its 33rd annual conference from 8 to 11 April 2026 in Vienna, Austria, hosted by the mdw — University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. The conference brought together music educators, researchers, and practitioners from across Europe and beyond to discuss the theme "Advance Democracy: Participation, Diversity, and Social Cohesion in Music Education."
The conference offered a combination of plenary sessions, paper presentations, symposia, and workshops. Keynote speakers addressed how music education can contribute to democratic values, inclusive practice, and social integration across diverse school communities. Delegates explored practical approaches to music teaching in pluralistic, multicultural settings, as well as the role of music in fostering a sense of belonging and civic engagement among students.
The EAS brings together national associations for music education from countries across Europe and serves as the professional home for those working at the intersection of music and schooling. The association's annual conference rotates between host countries and institutions, and the 2026 Vienna edition was notable for the decision to have all keynote presentations streamed online for those unable to attend in person. The next conference is scheduled for Slovakia in October 2026.
The EAS conference is one of the primary annual forums for music education research and practice in Europe, drawing on scholarship from areas including music pedagogy, educational psychology, sociology, and arts policy.
