European Driving Schools Association embraces AI in training
The European Driving Schools Association has placed artificial intelligence at the centre of its updated strategic roadmap, following its March 2026 general assembly in Spielberg, Austria, hosted by the Austrian Driving Schools Association.
The assembly produced concrete commitments across research, development and international networking, with AI integration in driver training identified as one of three core strategic priorities. Delegates explored how AI tools could enhance both teaching effectiveness and road safety outcomes for learners across Europe, marking a meaningful shift in how the federation approaches curriculum development.
Key discussions also covered the new European Driving Licence Directive, progress on the TRUST project for driving instructor certification, and a new wave of Erasmus+ initiatives. The federation also reached significant membership milestones at the assembly, welcoming Lithuania, Moldova and Poland as full members, and adding Anglat and Guidosimplex as new associate members.
A particularly notable development from the period was a pioneering initiative by UNASCA, the leading Italian driving schools association and EFA member. Driving instructors in Italy completed the first-ever training programme certifying them as Lay BLSD (Basic Life Support and Defibrillation) instructors, giving them the authority to teach lifesaving techniques as part of standard licence courses. The EFA has encouraged other national members to explore similar approaches.
The federation also presented its latest advancements in driver education to the UN Economic Commission for Europe working party on road traffic safety in March, reinforcing its role as a recognised voice in shaping European and global standards.
