CIOL publishes CIOL Voices feature on responsible AI in translation
The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) has published a new article in its CIOL Voices series examining the responsible use of artificial intelligence in translation and why critical engagement matters. The article forms part of CIOL's ongoing programme of thought leadership aimed at helping members navigate the accelerating impact of generative AI on professional practice.
The piece argues that translators retain a distinctive professional role even as AI-assisted workflows become standard, and sets out the questions linguists should ask when evaluating tools, outputs, and client briefs. CIOL has been active in shaping wider sector conversations alongside the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and the International Federation of Translators, producing guidance on quality assurance, attribution, and client communication.
The Institute has said that responsible AI use is becoming a defining competence for chartered linguists, with professional registration and qualifications increasingly expected to reflect an understanding of how and when these tools should be deployed. CIOL Voices articles are published on a rolling basis and are made available both to members and to the wider language community.
