CILTUK Co-Creates Logistics Work Experience Guide with DfT

A practical guide to help logistics employers deliver quality work experience for young people has been published.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK has co-developed a new guide designed to help logistics employers deliver high-quality work experience programmes for young people. Published on 8 April 2026, the guide was produced in collaboration with the Department for Transport's Freight Workforce Group, alongside other membership organisations and industry professionals.

Titled Work Experience: A Guide for Logistics Employers in England, the practical document sets out the benefits of work experience for both young people and employers, and explains why it is a critical component in addressing long-term workforce challenges across the freight and logistics sector. It outlines different work experience models, including in-person, longer-term and virtual approaches, alongside case studies from successful programmes already operating within the industry.

The guide also includes practical steps on equity and accessibility, links to national careers frameworks, and guidance for those working with schools, colleges and careers partners. Fiona Palmer, Head of Education and Professional Standards at CILT(UK), said the institute was proud of the work delivered in partnership with the Department for Transport Freight Workforce Group. She highlighted the importance of inspiring young people to understand the sector at an early stage, describing the next generation as the backbone of the future logistics workforce.

The guide is available via the GOV.UK publications portal.
