BIFA’s first in-person National Conference in 20 years highlights digital and trade challenges

BIFA's 2025 National Conference brings together industry professionals to discuss sustainability, cybersecurity, and changing trade dynamics after 20 years.

The British International Freight Association's (BIFA) National Conference 2025, held at The Slate, University of Warwick, marked a significant return to in-person events for the organisation, with the previous large-scale conference taking place nearly two decades ago. Under the theme “Ignite Today. Accelerate Tomorrow,” the two-day event brought together logistics professionals from across the UK, showcasing a wide array of expert panels, industry updates, and invaluable networking opportunities.

Steve Parker, BIFA's Director General, described the conference as “a resounding success,” particularly praising its role in uniting members and stakeholders to engage with the future of freight forwarding and logistics. “There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout. It was great to see so many members and supporters of our industry in one room, discussing where we are today and where we’re heading,” he remarked, highlighting the collaborative spirit that permeated the discussions.

The first day of the conference featured critical explorations of various sectors, including airfreight and ocean freight, as well as sustainability, customs, and legal developments. The second day shifted focus towards the digital landscape, addressing cybersecurity and data protection—a pressing issue in today's logistics environment. Notably, a session titled “What Does Trump Mean for Trade?” offered attendees timely insights relevant to current geopolitical dynamics, featuring a trade expert recently returned from Washington, D.C. Participants were also granted an exclusive first look at BIFA’s updated Standard Trading Conditions, set for official launch later this year.

The conference wasn’t solely about presentations; it fostered a vibrant exhibition zone where BIFA's associate member companies showcased innovative products and services. This created opportunities for discussion and collaboration across the entire freight and logistics supply chain, reinforcing the importance of partnership in navigating the sector's challenges. Key exhibitors included prominent industry players such as Axe, Conex, Freightcover, and MCP plc.

A highlight of the event was the gala dinner, featuring an invigorating keynote address from Olympian and broadcaster Kriss Akabusi MBE. His motivational speech resonated deeply with the attendees, complementing the atmosphere of camaraderie and inspiration that characterized the conference. Adding to the discussions, MP Stella Creasy addressed the evolving UK-EU relationship, urging the freight industry to be more proactive in making its voice heard by policymakers—a sentiment echoed by Parker, who acknowledged the industry's commitment to meet this challenge head-on.

Reflecting on the feedback received post-conference, Parker noted a consensus among attendees that the event transcended mere information sharing; it was a catalyst for transformation within the industry. He expressed optimism for future conferences, stating, “While we were pleased with the event, we know we can build on it and hope to see even more members at our next national conference.”

As the logistics sector anticipates significant transformations in 2025, largely driven by advancements in trade agreements, automation, and sustainability efforts, BIFA is poised to support its members in navigating these changes. According to projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), global trade volumes are expected to rise by 3.2% in 2025, propelled by easing geopolitical tensions and burgeoning e-commerce. BIFA is committed to equipping its members with the tools necessary to embrace this evolving landscape, ensuring resilience amid the challenges posed by fluctuating demand and regulatory complexities.

The National Conference 2025 not only marked a pivotal event for BIFA but also underscored the broader commitment of the freight forwarding and logistics sectors to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
