ACFI unveils tech-driven strategy to position India as global air cargo hub by 2030

At a Curtain Raiser event in New Delhi, the ACFI unveiled plans for the 2025 Conclave, emphasizing innovation, ESG trade lanes, and regulatory resilience to boost India's role in global air cargo.

The Air Cargo Forum India (ACFI) recently hosted a high-profile Curtain Raiser event on 20 June at Pullman New Delhi Aerocity, providing an insightful preview of its upcoming Annual Conclave scheduled for 11 July 2025 at Taj Palace, New Delhi. The theme, “Air Cargo Leadership in a Changing World – India at the Forefront of Global Transformation,” sets an ambitious tone, underscoring India’s strategic positioning as a pivotal player in the evolving global air cargo sector.

The Curtain Raiser attracted leading voices from across the air cargo ecosystem, including stakeholders from airlines, airport operators, freight forwarders, courier services, and customs brokers, all representing the broad community that ACFI was founded to serve. Since its establishment in 2012, ACFI has aimed to foster a world-class, environmentally sustainable air logistics industry in India through innovation, policy advocacy, skill development, and technological advancement. It also operates regional chapters in major cities, boosting connectivity within the industry.

A key highlight of the event was the launch of the ACFI Tech Arena, which features cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), automation, and green logistics solutions. This initiative reflects the increasing importance of technology in bolstering the efficiency, sustainability, and resilience of air cargo operations. Attendees were also given a preview of four strategic session themes for the main conclave. These include India's air cargo growth trajectory, the integration of tech-enabled operations, ESG-led (environmental, social, and governance) trade lanes, and strategies to enhance regulatory resilience within the industry.

Prominent speakers, including Satish Lakkaraju and Keku Bomi Gazder, emphasised the critical need for proactive industry planning and innovation. Lakkaraju, who has previously highlighted air cargo's economic significance—including an expected growth rate of 4.5% from 2021 to 2026 and its role in transporting goods worth USD 6 trillion globally—underlined how improving air cargo connectivity by just 1% can increase trade by 6% for countries involved. Their insights are consistent with prior ACFI events, where industry leaders consistently emphasise technology and collaboration as drivers for growth and competitiveness.

ACFI President Yashpal Sharma reiterated the organisation’s commitment to positioning India as a global hub for air cargo through policy reforms and innovative logistics solutions. This resonates with India’s broader ambition of reaching a throughput of 10 million metric tonnes (MMT) in its air cargo sector by 2030-31, a goal that ACFI has actively promoted in partnership with government bodies like the Ministry of Civil Aviation and DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade). At past conclaves, Sharma has underscored the importance of unity among stakeholders, declaring, “Only if we stand together will we be heard and will be seen,” highlighting the sector’s call for collective effort to overcome challenges and capitalise on emerging opportunities.

The Curtain Raiser also recognised Cathay Cargo as the Title Sponsor, reflecting strong industry support and cross-border collaboration. The event culminated with an engaging media interaction and networking session, reinforcing the message that innovation, collaboration, and strategic foresight are key to navigating the rapid transformations in the air cargo landscape.

Looking ahead to the 2025 Conclave, industry observers expect a dynamic forum that not only addresses pressing issues such as regulatory changes and sustainability but also harnesses technology and leadership to elevate India’s air cargo sector on the global stage. With ACFI’s continued leadership and broad-based engagement, the Indian air cargo industry appears well-positioned to unlock new growth pathways and set new standards for the region.
