About the Organisation

European Cockpit Association (ECA) is the representative body of professional pilots at EU level, speaking for over 44,000 pilots from national pilot associations across 33 European states, plus three associate members. Founded in 1991 and based in Brussels, ECA represents pilots' collective interests at EU level, working to secure the highest standards of aviation safety and to defend social rights and quality employment across the profession. From aviation safety regulation to crew working conditions, ECA represents the pilots' voice, and we want the public, media, and policymakers to hear it.

About the role

ECA is looking for an experienced Communications & Campaigns Manager to lead the development and delivery of communications, advocacy- and public affairs-related campaigns across Europe. Based in Brussels, the successful candidate will combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution to strengthen ECA's visibility, influence public and policy discussions, engage stakeholders, and drive impactful campaigns.The role requires an experienced communications professional with a strong understanding of the EU policy environment, digital advocacy, media relations, and brand building.

Responsibilities

Strategic Communications:

  • Develop communications strategies that support advocacy goals and organisational positioning.
  • Create messaging frameworks, communication plans, and stakeholder engagement approaches.
  • Provide strategic communications advice to senior leadership, experts, and the broader team.
  • Identify opportunities to increase visibility and influence within EU and international policy discussions.

Campaigns:

  • Develop and implement integrated advocacy communications and campaigns aligned with organisational priorities.
  • Translate policy objectives into campaign narratives and audience-focused engagement strategies.
  • Lead campaign planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation across multiple channels.

Media Relations & Crisis Communications:

  • Act as ECA's main point of contact for Brussels-based, European, and international media.
  • Build and maintain proactive relationships with journalists covering aviation, transport, and EU policy.
  • Develop press materials including press releases, media briefings, op-eds, and talking points.
  • Proactively identify media opportunities and manage reactive communications.
  • Lead crisis communications: monitor for emerging risks, coordinate internal response, and manage external messaging during sensitive situations.
  • Prepare and coach spokespeople ahead of interviews, press conferences, and high-stakes media moments.
  • Maintain a crisis communications protocol and ensure the organisation is response-ready.

Public Affairs & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Support engagement with EU institutions, policymakers, and key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate participation in events, roundtables, and public discussions.
  • Help strengthen ECA's presence within relevant policy and advocacy networks.

Digital Communications & Advocacy:

  • Lead digital advocacy initiatives, including organic social media strategy, to support campaign objectives.
  • Oversee website content and campaign landing pages.
  • Utilise digital tools to expand reach, mobilise audiences, and increase engagement.
  • Develop digital storytelling approaches using multimedia and data-driven content.

Content & Creative Development:

  • Provide creative direction and scripting input for video content produced by ECA's content creator, ensuring strong narrative and visual storytelling.
  • Oversee layout and visual design of campaign materials, briefing designers/content creators and ensuring consistent visual storytelling.
  • Apply strong news judgment to identify and shape compelling angles in ECA's work.
  • Coordinate and manage internal and external content creators, designers, and consultants.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and brand alignment across all communications outputs.
  • Translate complex policy issues into accessible and compelling content.

Data, Insights & Reporting:

  • Use audience insights, analytics, and campaign performance data to inform decision-making.
  • Develop dashboards and visualisations to communicate campaign results and impact.
  • Monitor media coverage, stakeholder engagement, and campaign effectiveness.
  • Produce reports and recommendations for continuous improvement.

Leadership & Project Management:

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Support budget planning and management for communications and campaign activities.
  • Contribute to organisational planning and communications capacity-building.

Skills, Competencies, Experience & Attributes

Essential:

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in policy communications, journalism, and related communications/marketing functions.
  • Strong understanding of EU institutions, policy processes, and the Brussels stakeholder landscape.
  • Native or near-native English speaker, with excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Proven experience developing and delivering successful communications and advocacy-related campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations, including handling crises and reactive communications under pressure.
  • Confidence preparing and coaching spokespeople, including under time pressure.
  • Experience managing websites, digital communications channels, and digital advocacy initiatives.
  • Strong creative direction skills: briefing, scripting, and giving feedback on video content, even if you're not the one behind the camera or in the edit suite.
  • An eye for layout and visual design, with the ability to brief and direct designers/content creators effectively.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to translate complex policy topics into clear and engaging communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

Desirable:

  • NGO/association experience.
  • Experience with data visualisation, audience analytics, and communications measurement.
  • Familiarity with campaign and digital engagement tools, CRM systems, and website content management platforms
