About the role

Step into a role at the heart of Westminster, where insight and influence combine to shape decisions that matter. As our Senior Public Affairs Adviser for Westminster, you will have strong experience in public affairs or Parliament, alongside a clear understanding of how policy, legislation, and political debate are shaped.

A key part of this role will include contributing to the planning and delivery of parliamentary activity, including the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Motor Neurone Disease (MND), parliamentary events and inquiries, while also supporting campaigning activity and ensuring high-quality briefings and communications that strengthen the MND Association’s voice and impact.

You will be working in an exciting and fast-paced environment, balancing priorities and responding to emerging political developments with focus and judgement. As an effective communicator, you will engage with senior parliamentary and government stakeholders, drafting clear and persuasive briefings and identifying opportunities to influence change for the MND Community.

Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work with the political system in Westminster to achieve positive change for people affected by MND.
  • Work with the Public Affairs Manager to identify public affairs priorities and proactively identify opportunities to influence party political debates, legislation, and select committees in relation to our work.
  • Support on the development and delivery of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on MND’s work programme.
  • Work with the Policy Team to identify opportunities to take forward policy priorities through public affairs activity and brief parliamentarians for meetings and debates.
  • Draft correspondence and briefings for parliamentarians.
  • Support submissions to parliamentary inquiries (Select Committees).
  • Working with the Public Affairs Manager, identify and develop effective links with key parliamentarians, influencers and decision makers whose remit may impact the sphere of our work, including senior civil servants, etc.
  • Represent the Association on public affairs coalitions and at events as required.
  • Help plan and deliver the Association’s activities at the political party conferences.

Skills, Competencies, Experience & Attributes

Essential Criteria:

  • A good understanding of parliamentary processes and procedures, and of the political landscape.
  • Demonstrable experience of either a public affairs role, preferably related to health/social care, and of working in Parliament.
  • Experience of working with Parliamentarians.
  • Excellent influencing ability and confidence to engage with a wide variety of people, from senior politicians to local volunteers.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use databases and social media for public affairs purposes.
  • Available for occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Travel to external meetings and events as required, including the ability to attend Parliament regularly and at short notice.
