Professionalisation of an occupation

The process of professionalisation incorporates two critical aspects. The first aspect includes the setting of requirements for practice within the occupation, while the second aspect is more outward looking and focuses on developing and influencing societal acceptance of the occupation as a profession.

The process of professionalisation incorporates two critical aspects. The first aspect includes the setting of requirements for practice within the occupation, while the second aspect is more outward looking and focuses on developing and influencing societal acceptance of the occupation as a profession. It is essential for associations and professional bodies to clearly define what professionalisation will mean for the occupation, the practitioners, as well as what it will mean to society as a whole. In order to do this effectively, it is recommended that a professionalisation strategy be developed.

This workshop will include insight into strategies that have been employed within a selected professional body, as well as considerations for the development of a sound professionalisation strategy. The intention of this workshop is to stimulate thoughts and discussions related to professionalisation, as well as assist attendees to conceptualise their organisation’s professionalisation strategies.
