NPTA launches new initiative for young pest control professionals

The National Pest Technicians Association introduces the Syngenta NPTA 5<25 Professional Futures initiative to support and train aspiring young professionals in the pest management industry.

The National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) has launched a new initiative aimed at fostering the next generation of professionals within the pest control industry. This initiative, named the Syngenta NPTA 5<25 Professional Futures, is designed to provide training and development opportunities specifically for young individuals aspiring to build a career in pest management.

Announced by NPTA Chief Executive, Kevin Lawrenson, the initiative represents a significant milestone in elevating the profile of the pest control sector. "The training and development for young people offered by Syngenta NPTA 5<25 Professional Futures is a key milestone in our vision... We are committed at the NPTA in raising the profile of the industry and the opportunities it provides people to carve out a career for themselves," Lawrenson stated. This initiative is a response to the pressing need to attract young talent to the industry amid challenges in retention and development.

The NPTA has positioned this initiative as crucial to not only support its members but also to ensure that the pest control industry maintains high standards of practice within a competitive landscape. Lawrenson reiterated, "This initiative empowers our members to grow their businesses with the right tools, training, and support."

Richard Moseley, Business Manager at Syngenta Professional Solutions, is collaborating closely with the NPTA on this initiative. In his comments, he emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent, stating, "The pest control industry faces a significant threat in retaining bright young people to stay within the industry." He described the Syngenta NPTA 5<25 Professional Futures initiative as a promising avenue for young professionals to thrive, highlighting the importance of forging connections within the industry. “We are pleased to sponsor this important initiative, as well as provide ongoing support,” he said.

The initiative’s training programme has garnered support from industry leaders, including Killgerm Training. Dr Matthew Davies, Head of Technical Department at Killgerm Chemicals Ltd, praised the initiative's objectives, describing it as “brilliant” and expressing the company's eagerness to participate. He announced that Killgerm Training will offer the RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management, which serves as a foundational qualification for anyone entering the field. Dr Davies noted, “It has become the benchmark qualification in the industry.”

The training curriculum will encompass a comprehensive range of topics essential for pest control professionals. Participants will acquire knowledge about the biology and behaviour of various public health pests, as well as health and safety protocols, relevant legislation, and customer care techniques. Successful completion of the training will culminate in the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Level 2 Award in Pest Management examination, awarding participants a formal qualification.

This initiative represents a collaborative effort to not only enhance the skills and knowledge of young pest controllers but also to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the pest control profession. Both NPTA and Syngenta are clearly focused on creating a supportive environment for new entrants to the field.
