IPAF launches new eLearning options to broaden MEWP operator training in North America

IPAF introduces two innovative training pathways for mobile elevating work platform operators, enhancing compliance, accessibility, and flexibility. New eLearning courses meet ANSI and CSA standards and support the industry’s growing need for scalable, high-quality safety education, timed with World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025.

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) has introduced two new training solutions for mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) operators in North America, addressing the increasing demand for flexible, scalable, and compliant safety training options. This initiative aims to enhance access to critical MEWP operator education while maintaining adherence to industry standards, thus supporting the safe and effective use of MEWPs across various sectors.

Previously, IPAF's certified training centres have been the primary avenue for delivering comprehensive MEWP training, combining theoretical and practical instruction and culminating in the issuance of the globally recognised IPAF-powered access licence card. These centres operate under strict IPAF audit and administrative support to ensure full compliance.

The newly launched alternatives expand the scope of operator training options in North America to include:

  1. Aerial Lift (MEWP) Training Delivered by Training Solution Providers: This approach allows companies to offer IPAF's MEWP operator theory eLearning without attaining full training centre status. Training solution providers deliver ANSI/CSA-compliant theoretical courses, conduct their own practical evaluations using IPAF's support guides, issue certifications, and brand the training materials with their own logos. They operate independently, with optional support from IPAF, thus enabling wider dissemination of quality training.

  2. IPAF Training Referral Partner Programme: This programme enables MEWP manufacturers, rental companies, and industry associations to promote IPAF’s accredited MEWP operator and supervisor eLearning courses through unique referral links. Partners do not conduct training directly but benefit financially by referring clients to the official IPAF eLearning programmes.

Both new training options provide access to two key eLearning courses: MEWP Operator Theory Training and MEWP Supervisor Training. These courses are accessible on multiple devices and languages, feature knowledge checks and scenario-based learning, and comply with ANSI A92.24 and CSA B354 standards. Practical assessments are conducted in person through IPAF's approved network of Training Centres.

Tony Groat, North America manager for IPAF, highlighted the significant market need for reliable training, stating, "An estimated 2-3 million operators require MEWP operator training annually in North America to maintain compliance with safety regulations and industry standards. However, many online courses claim to be ANSI or OSHA-compliant but fall well short of accepted standards, which puts workers and operations at risk." He emphasised that IPAF's new eLearning options expand access to high-quality training for operators and contractors across the region.

Groat also pointed out the benefits for rental companies and equipment dealers, "Offering IPAF training as part of your service can add real value for your existing customers—and attract new ones, without becoming a full IPAF Training Center. It's about flexibility, compliance, and promoting safe practices at scale."

He further added, "Our new eLearning models make high-quality, compliant MEWP safety training more accessible than ever, offering scalable, self-paced digital theory classes with no scheduling constraints via a modern, user-friendly platform for an improved learning experience."

The launch of these new training solutions coincides with the International Labour Organization’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2025, an event highlighting how digital transformation can improve workplace safety and health. IPAF’s initiative aligns with this focus by leveraging digital platforms to enhance operator skills and compliance in the MEWP sector.

This expanded training framework offers organisations varied means to ensure their personnel receive industry-approved, accessible safety education designed to meet evolving operational demands throughout North America.
