HFMA webinar reveals how trade association membership boosts confidence and compliance for UK health sector firms
The Health Food Manufacturers’ Association (HFMA) is set to host a free webinar on October 7 to shed light on the tangible benefits of trade association membership for companies in the natural products sector. Titled "United Voice: The Importance of a Trade Association, The Benefits of Industry Bodies’ Membership," the session responds to frequent inquiries about the value of joining such groups. The HFMA seeks to provide clarity on how membership can support businesses, particularly in navigating the complex regulatory landscape that affects food supplements, natural skincare, pet supplements, and health and organic foods in the UK market.
The webinar will be chaired by HFMA’s PR and Marketing Consultant, Theresa Cutts, and feature a panel including Martin Last, the HFMA’s Director General, Janet Groves from Lanes Health, Emma Ellis of BioCare, and Tom Moses of Natural Trade Brokers. The panel members will share their personal experiences to demonstrate how HFMA membership benefits their companies, especially in terms of regulatory compliance, legislative issues, and business growth. Martin Last emphasised in the original announcement that in today’s challenging trading and political environment, trade associations offer a crucial united voice. They not only ensure members stay abreast of evolving legislation but also actively represent their concerns to policymakers and opinion leaders, reinforcing business resilience and credibility.
Since its foundation in 1965, the HFMA has established itself as the UK’s leading trade organisation for manufacturers and suppliers of specialist health products. With approximately 120 members, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, the HFMA plays a pivotal role in advocating for its members at legislative, regulatory, and parliamentary levels. It promotes best practices in product quality, safety, and responsible consumer information. Membership opens doors to expert advice and regulatory support, providing a significant competitive advantage in an industry often burdened by complex rules on exporting, importing, and labelling.
The association operates several well-regarded codes of practice, including those for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), labelling and advertising, and the upper safe levels for supplements. These codes ensure that member companies maintain high standards and deliver safe products to consumers. HFMA members also benefit from dedicated regulatory guidance through the Primary Authority-accredited CLEAR CHECK team, which helps companies remain compliant while navigating evolving legislation. The organisation fosters industry collaboration through special interest groups such as the Collagen Special Interest Group and Probiotics Working Group, which facilitate focused discussions on emerging trends and regulatory challenges.
Beyond compliance and advocacy, membership offers practical benefits that can impact the bottom line. Industry experts note that being part of a trade association often provides financial advantages, such as discounted access to sector-related services and events, which can offset membership costs. Moreover, association membership enhances a company’s professional credibility and reputation, signalling a commitment to high standards and ethical business practices. This reputation advantage can be critical in building trust with consumers, retailers, and regulatory bodies alike.
The HFMA also reinforces its commitment to responsible business practices internally. Recently, it achieved accreditation as a living wage employer, ensuring its staff receive wages aligned with the real cost of living in London. This accreditation reflects the organisation’s broader dedication to welfare and social responsibility, setting a positive example within the industry it serves.
As the natural products sector continues to evolve under the weight of regulatory, economic, and political pressures, trade associations like the HFMA offer indispensable support. For companies looking to enter or expand within the UK market, the upcoming webinar offers a timely opportunity to understand how collaboration, shared expertise, and a united industry voice can enhance business sustainability and growth.
