AIUB forges 16 new international partnerships at AUAP 30th anniversary conference
The pursuit of a stable and progressive world hinges on our capacity to foster collaboration beyond national borders, as has become increasingly vital in addressing global challenges. The recent developments at the 37th Annual Conference of the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) exemplify this spirit of unity. This gathering, scheduled for 21st to 23rd May 2025 in Manila, Philippines, not only marks the 30th anniversary of AUAP but aims to advance excellence in global sustainability by aligning educational institutions with international rankings and standards.
Co-hosted by twelve prestigious universities from the Philippines and Thailand, including Rizal Technology University and Centro Escolar University, the conference attracted 170 participants from 49 institutions across 15 countries, spanning Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America. The theme, "Global Networks: Paving the Way for Innovative, Diverse, and Sustainable Academic Landscapes in Asia and the Pacific," further underscores the intention to cultivate constructive partnerships that enhance the academic landscape regionally and globally.
The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), a committed member of AUAP since 2003, played a prominent role in the proceedings. Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, AIUB’s Board Member and former Vice Chancellor, contributed her extensive experience during the conference. In her remarks at the 30th Anniversary Celebration, she reflected on the significant impact of AUAP in reshaping higher education and emphasized the importance of international collaborations in fostering academic excellence. “Together, as a united academia, we can drive transformative changes,” Dr. Lamagna conveyed during her address.
The conference also served as a platform for significant networking opportunities, culminating in AIUB securing 16 new partnerships and renewing two existing agreements with various institutions. These collaborations are set to enrich educational offerings through joint initiatives under Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Participating institutions included notable names such as Cebu Institute of Technology-University, Daejeon Health University in South Korea, and Sias University in China. This strategic networking aligns well with broader educational trends advocating for internationalisation—a move from merely aspirational goals to practical imperatives for growth in an interconnected academic ecosystem.
Moreover, discussions of collaborative efforts extend beyond the immediate partnerships formed at the conference. Several other constructive collaborations were identified, with plans for formalisation through virtual signing ceremonies following the event. Such initiatives are not just about institutional alignment; they reflect a dedication to delivering holistic education, which is increasingly vital in preparing students for diverse global challenges.
The significance of this academic gathering lies in its reaffirmation of a shared commitment to fostering cultural exchange and innovation within higher education. As institutions like AIUB take active steps to engage in international partnerships, the call for a global educational framework becomes more pronounced. The implacable shift towards internationalisation is not merely a trend; it is a foundational principle essential for analysing and addressing contemporary issues in the realm of education.
As the global educational landscape continues to evolve, the efforts exhibited at the AUAP conference signal a transformative period for institutions engaged in higher education across the Asia-Pacific region. These endeavours will play a crucial role in shaping the future of education and will undoubtedly contribute to a more united and sustainable world for generations to come.
