About the role
We are looking for a Skills Development and Engagement Coordinator who will be involved in supporting the programme journey of a young person from when they have a confirmed place on our programmes to the point when they start their expedition or adventure with us. The successful candidate will coordinate the delivery of our Expedition Workshops and manage our Workshop Facilitators.
Responsibilities
Main Responsibilities & Accountabilities:
- To help young people throughout a programme to develop their skills, confidence, prepare for an expedition and meet agreed fundraising targets
- To be the point of contact for pre-expedition skills development queries from young people
- To benchmark needs, goals and skills for each young person using agreed tools
- To design engaging resources and deliver training and support for each young person focused on fundraising and (in collaboration with our
- Programmes team) expedition preparation (fitness, personal kit, vaccinations)
- To support young people in developing their fundraising skills and a preparation plan to ensure they meet their fundraising target and are ready to go on an expedition
- To track and report progress with each young person
- To work alongside referral partners, friends, and family to ensure appropriate levels of support for each young person
- To ensure that all young people’s fundraising activity and preparation is appropriate, safe, and in keeping with good practice and our own policies and legislation
- Coordinating the delivery of Expedition Workshops. Delivering the
- Expedition Workshops when a facilitator is unavailable.
- Reviewing and updating the resources and structure of the workshops as and when needed
- Maintaining positive engagement through the creation of social posts, newsletters or other resources
- With the Senior Manager Young People, measuring the impact and collating evaluations for reporting, funding, and marketing purposes.
Other Duties:
- Liaise with key British Exploring Society team members to ensure positive outcomes before, during and after programme delivery.
- With the support of the Senior Manager Young People, ensure accurate and up-to-date reporting on all elements of the recruitment and engagement journey of young people.
- Support the Development Team with data and case studies for funding reports and bids.
- Supporting the lessons learnt review process post-expedition
- To participate in the team rota as a Pastoral Duty Officer during periods when the charity is running a 24-hour support service for our training events and expeditions.
- Supporting, where needed, events organised by the charity to further its mission. For example, Explorer Celebrations.
- Any other duties reasonably requested by the Senior Manager of Young People.
Skills, Competencies, Experience & Attributes
Skills, Knowledge & Understanding:
- Ability to form close and effective relationships with young people from a wide range of backgrounds and be adept at providing support, guidance and, if necessary, challenge
- Able to provide energy and encouragement throughout the preparation process for the young people we support, identifying and tackling issues with them as they go
- Communicate insights about the needs and talents of the young people we are working with appropriately with a wider team.
- Understanding of KPIs and deriving insights for wider organisation reporting
- Ability to work consistently and collaboratively with colleagues, senior managers, and external partners to deliver results
- Experience of working in a fast-moving environment, with an ability to handle numerous projects with competing deadlines and priorities
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work well and with good humour under pressure
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Independent working and self-motivated to lead on creative projects
- Strong organisational skills
- Understanding of youth development and a belief in the opportunities for positive change that expeditions and outdoor education provide for all young people
- IT proficiency, including office suites
Required Qualifications
- English and Maths to at least GCSE equivalent level
Compensation & Benefits
- 23 days’ paid holiday per holiday year in addition to normal English Bank and Public holidays.
- Birthdays are given as leave days following completion of probation.
- Additional leave days are awarded for long service.

Working locations
- Hybrid model, working in the London office and remotely

Interviews
- We will contact suitable candidates to arrange a short call with the Senior Manager of the Young People Team, for no more than 10 minutes. Candidates will be sent a short scenario by email shortly before the call. This will be discussed during the call. Some candidates will then be invited for an interview in person at our offices in South Kensington.
- If you are not invited for an interview, we will contact you by email to let you know. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer feedback to candidates not invited to an in-person interview.
