About the role

The Financial Planning and Analysis Manager (FP&A Manager) at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) will play a pivotal role in supporting the college's mission to improve child health by overseeing the financial health and sustainability of the organisation. This position requires a strategic and detail-oriented finance leader with strong not-for-profit experience who can lead on financial planning processes, develop financial models, and provide strategic financial insights to support decision-making within an organisation.

The FP&A Manager will ensure that a strong culture of business partnering is fostered and will support the wider finance team to meet the regular and ad hoc financial planning, reporting, and advisory needs of the organisation. The FP&A Manager will work in collaboration with the other finance staff members to ensure critical financial operations are undertaken successfully, including ensuring timely month-end and year-end closes, compliance with all regulatory requirements, and the successful delivery and management of finance system development and other strategic projects.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, produce regular financial performance reports, and develop financial models to support key strategic decisions. You will ensure that the College’s leadership has access to clear, insightful analysis to guide financial and operational planning. You will foster a culture of effective business partnering, providing expert financial advice and support to budget holders and colleagues across the organisation.

Responsibilities

Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process with the Associate Director of Finance, working with the financial planning and analysis team to create a comprehensive financial plan aligned with the College's strategic objectives
  • Develop and lead a cycle of regular re-forecasting against the budget.

Financial Reporting & Analysis:

  • Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual Balance Sheets.
  • Develop monthly capital project spending reports and analyse variances, providing insight to management on performance against budget.
  • Lead the development of financial models and analysis to support key strategic decisions.
  • Prepare financial reports for the Senior Leadership Team, Audit Finance Risk Committee, and Board of Trustees, ensuring alignment with RCPCH’s goals.

Financial Controls & Compliance:

  • Implement and maintain robust financial controls working with the Financial Controller to ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements (including charity-specific regulations).
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with all Charity Commission and Companies House reporting and filing requirements, and any other relevant compliance requirements as needed.
  • Oversee financial contractual compliance, including due diligence review of any proposed contracts, including external donor funding terms and conditions, and propose, develop, and track any necessary budgetary or other financial measures needed to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in the preparation of group statutory accounts, coordinating with auditors to ensure smooth and successful audits.

Cash Flow Management & Treasury:

  • Support the Financial Controller with Monitoring of cash flow, ensuring adequate funds are available for operational needs and strategic initiatives.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and training to enhance the skills and capabilities of the finance team.

Strategic Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with department heads across RCPCH to provide financial insights and analysis in support of program initiatives and resource allocation.
  • Ensure regular, consistent business partnering is undertaken between finance staff and all budget holders to provide support and critical challenge across the finances of the organisation, to support the timely delivery of monthly management accounts, regular reforecasts, and the annual budget.
  • Oversee finance training for non-finance staff according to organisational needs, including induction for new budget holders, and refresher training ahead of annual budget and other key processes.
  • Support the development and implementation of strategic projects, such as grant management and funding applications, in line with the College’s mission.

Skills, Competencies, Experience & Attributes

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in financial management roles, ideally within a nonprofit or public sector environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial planning, budgeting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience managing financial operations, preferably within a charity and healthcarefocused organization.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights.
  • Proficiency with financial management software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leadership capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to manage, mentor, and develop finance teams.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of charity-specific accounting and regulatory requirements, such as SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) for charities, fund and grant accounting.
  • Experience in using Business Central and equivalent ERP, financial systems and Dynamics and CRM.
  • Familiarity with the healthcare sector or public health organisations.
  • Working, developing, reporting and Power BI

Required Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, andrelated field; ACA, ACCA, CIMA, and equivalent professional accounting qualification required.
