Since 1962, the National Autistic Society has been campaigning to transform lives, change attitudes, and create a society that works for autistic people. In National Programmes, we champion the rights and interests of autistic people and their families, making sure national policy and legislation reflect their needs. We provide autism training and best practice services and want all autistic people to have access to services and support that fully meet their needs. We provide diagnostic services, training, accreditation, consultancy, and conferences, designed to support all professionals and organisations.  

The Supporter Fundraising team is responsible for managing and growing all supporter-led fundraising activity, including third-party challenge events, community fundraising, and our own portfolio of fundraising events. Together, our work generates over £1 million in income each year, vital funds that help the National Autistic Society achieve its mission: a society that works for autistic people.

About the role

The Digital Operations Officer maintains and improves the National Autistic Society’s website and digital platforms to ensure content is accurate, accessible, and user-friendly. The role involves managing web requests, acting as a CMS super-user, and ensuring all platforms are technically sound and compliant with digital standards. A central part of the work is empowering colleagues to manage their own content through training and ongoing support.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and responding to incoming web requests to provide support across the organisation.
  • Building and maintaining web pages and forms in the CMS (Kentico) to ensure they are accessible and compliant.
  • Reviewing all published content as a quality gatekeeper for accuracy, design consistency, and digital standards.
  • Creating training guides and delivering CMS sessions to help teams manage their own content effectively.
  • Controlling user roles and permissions within the CMS to keep access up to date.
  • Conducting regular content and technical audits to identify and fix broken links, SEO issues, and performance factors.
  • Monitoring performance using tools like Google Analytics and Data Studio to recommend improvements.

Skills, Competencies, Experience & Attributes

Experience:

  • Hands-on CMS Management: Proven experience using a content management system (Kentico preferred) to build and maintain web pages.
  • Content Quality Control: Experience reviewing and publishing digital content, ensuring it is accurate, accessible, and compliant.
  • Training and Support: Experience creating training guides, delivering training sessions, and supporting colleagues to use digital tools effectively.
  • SEO Management: Practical experience implementing on-page SEO best practices, including metadata management, internal linking, and using SEO tools such as SE Ranking (or similar) to monitor keyword performance and search visibility.
  • Data Protection Compliance: Experience applying GDPR principles to data collection and user interactions.
  • Web Forms Management: Experience creating and maintaining web forms, liaising with data teams to ensure proper handling of form submissions.
  • Analytics Application: Experience using analytics tools (Google Analytics, Data Studio) to monitor page performance and identify improvements.
  • Collaboration Across Teams: Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams, including UX, data teams, and developers.

Knowledge:

  • Content Management Systems: Strong understanding of CMS principles, including structured content, user permissions, and workflow management.
  • Accessibility Standards: In-depth knowledge of accessibility principles (WCAG) and how to ensure digital content is inclusive.
  • SEO Fundamentals: Clear understanding of on-page SEO principles, including metadata, internal linking, and search-friendly content structure.
  • Data Protection and GDPR: Knowledge of data protection requirements and best practices for managing user data securely.
  • Digital Analytics: Familiarity with analytics tools (Google Analytics, Data Studio), with the ability to track page performance and identify improvement areas.
  • Training and Empowerment: Understanding of best practices for creating training guides, delivering training sessions, and supporting teams to self-serve.
  • Web Forms and User Data: Knowledge of building and maintaining web forms.

Skills:

  • CMS Expertise: Confident user of content management systems (Kentico preferred), with the ability to build, maintain, and troubleshoot web pages.
  • Technical Web Awareness: Solid understanding of basic web code, including HTML, CSS, and an awareness of JavaScript - able to spot and troubleshoot minor code issues.
  • Website Fundamentals: Familiar with key web concepts, including canonical / pagination tags, sitemaps, robots.txt, meta tags, clean URL design, broken link management, redirect management, HTTP status codes, image optimisation, and basic structured data (Schema.org).
  • Quality Gatekeeper: Meticulous attention to detail, able to ensure all content is accurate, accessible, and compliant before it goes live.
  • Self-Service Champion: Strong ability to train and support colleagues, providing clear guidance that empowers teams to manage their own content.
  • SEO Awareness: Proficient in on-page SEO best practices, including metadata management, internal linking, and keyword optimisation.
  • Clear Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to create clear training guides and deliver effective training sessions.
  • Digital Best Practices: Strong understanding of accessibility principles (WCAG), data protection (GDPR), and digital content standards.
  • Analytical Skills: Comfortable using analytics tools (Google Analytics, Data Studio) to monitor page performance and identify improvements.

  • Educated to Bachelor's Degree level or with equivalent experience
