Sri Lanka’s professional associations showcase resilience and innovation at milestone conference

The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka marked 50 years at its 38th Annual Conference, emphasizing resilience and professional leadership in overcoming socio-economic challenges.

The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA) marked a significant milestone with its 38th Annual Conference and the 4th National Apex Awards, held on 19th and 20th August 2025 at Cinnamon Life, Colombo. This event not only celebrated the 50th anniversary of the OPA but also underscored the importance of professional unity and collaboration in advancing Sri Lanka's socio-economic development. The conference convened a wide spectrum of professionals alongside key political and economic leaders, including the Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne, and Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Treasury and Ministry of Finance, Planning & Economic Development.

In his welcome address, Mr. Sujeewa Lal Dahanayake, OPA President, reiterated the organisation's commitment to fostering national progress through multidisciplinary professional engagement and active collaboration with the government. The chosen theme, “Resilience and Outpace Redefined: Thriving and Adapting,” articulated by Mr. Jayantha Gallehewa, President-Elect and Conference Chairman, highlighted the critical need for adaptability and resilience amid Sri Lanka’s current developmental challenges. This theme resonated throughout the two-day proceedings, framing discussions on how professional expertise can drive innovation, national rebuilding, and economic growth in a complex environment.

The conference's inaugural session featured the Chief Guest, Hon. (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne, who emphasised the pivotal role of professionals in building a knowledge-based economy and fostering innovation essential for national progress. This tone was further reinforced during the keynote address by Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, who detailed how professional sectors could align with governmental strategies to bolster Sri Lanka’s economic planning and development efforts.

A highlight of the event was the 4th National Apex Awards, introduced by Hon. Justice Priyasath Dep, Chairman of the Panel of Judges. These prestigious awards recognised outstanding professionals who have rendered exceptional service in their respective fields and contributed to society’s broader advancement, thereby showcasing excellence across a multitude of disciplines. The awards ceremony not only acknowledged individual achievement but also illuminated the importance of professional leadership in national development.

The subsequent day’s technical sessions provided a vital platform for experts, policymakers, and practitioners to engage in in-depth dialogue on pressing socio-economic issues. These workshops and panel discussions were designed to generate actionable recommendations, which the OPA intends to use for policy advocacy and sustained engagement with government bodies. The participants’ insights are expected to shape policy frameworks that support resilience and adaptability, driving Sri Lanka’s recovery and long-term development goals.

The conference also offered valuable networking opportunities, with a closing dinner featuring cultural performances by singer Umariya Sinhawansa, fostering fellowship among professionals from diverse sectors. This blend of formal deliberation and informal interaction reinforced the OPA’s role as a central hub for professional collaboration and cross-disciplinary exchange.

Marking half a century of existence, the OPA’s Annual Conference and National Apex Awards poignantly underscored the organisation’s dedication to nurturing professional standards and enhancing the capacity of Sri Lanka’s professional community to contribute meaningfully to national progress. As the country navigates complex socio-economic challenges, the OPA stands as a vital conduit between the professional domain and government, advocating for knowledge-driven, resilient, and inclusive growth strategies.
