Paul Brown’s appointment as Build UK chair signals a new era of collaboration and innovation in UK construction

Paul Brown, chief executive of John Sisk & Son, has been appointed as the new chair of Build UK, the leading representative body for the UK construction industry, as the organisation marks its 10th anniversary. Taking over from Julie White, managing director of D-Drill & Sawing, Brown’s appointment was confirmed at Build UK’s annual general meeting, a key event where members also heard from Chief Secretary to the Treasury James Murray MP. Murray outlined the government’s ambitious plan to deliver £725 billion of economic and social infrastructure investment over the next decade, signalling a period of significant activity and opportunity for the construction sector.

With more than 25 years of leadership experience in civil engineering, Brown is well-positioned to lead Build UK through this pivotal time. He has been vice chair of the organisation since joining the board in 2022 and has earned a reputation as a strong advocate for innovation, collaboration, youth engagement, and diversity within the construction industry. Speaking after his appointment, Brown described the role as a “huge privilege,” emphasising the importance of fostering an integrated approach to infrastructure planning, improving project delivery methods, and maintaining the highest standards of building safety. He highlighted Build UK’s vital role in supporting these priorities and expressed his intent to work closely with members across the supply chain to showcase construction’s positive contribution to the economy and local communities.

Build UK chief executive Suzannah Nichol OBE welcomed Brown’s appointment, underscoring that his extensive leadership experience would be invaluable as the industry faces both exciting opportunities and complex challenges. Nichol also paid tribute to outgoing chair Julie White for her “outstanding contribution” over the past two years and her long-standing support for the organisation since joining the board a decade ago.

In addition to Brown’s appointment, Build UK has expanded its leadership team by adding two new board members: Katy Dowding, President and Chief Executive of Skanska, and Lee Rowswell from GKR Scaffolding. These additions reflect the organisation’s commitment to fostering broader industry collaboration and inclusivity.

Build UK itself is a collective of clients, contractors, trade associations, and other industry groups committed to driving change and promoting the value of construction.
