Nfrc launches free British Standards access and medical insurance to boost roofing sector professionalism

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors has introduced free downloads of sixteen key British Standards and a new personal medical insurance scheme for members, aiming to enhance technical competence, workforce health, and productivity across the roofing and cladding sectors.

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) has recently unveiled two pivotal member benefits aimed at enhancing the competence of its members and safeguarding their workforce. This initiative not only underscores NFRC’s dedication to professionalising the roofing and cladding sectors but also provides much-needed resources to bolster the capabilities of its member companies.

Members of NFRC can now access and download a selection of sixteen crucial British Standards directly from the NFRC Member Support Area, free of charge. This list includes key documents such as BS 5534, BS 6229, and BS 8000, which are essential for ensuring compliance with the UK’s stringent building regulations and health and safety legislation. Richard Miller, NFRC's director of membership, expressed the significance of this benefit, stating, "We know the value of BSI publications and we’ve worked tremendously hard to achieve this." The provision of these resources is anticipated to yield considerable financial savings for member companies while also fostering ongoing professional development.

Bob Richardson, head of technical and training at NFRC, added that access to these BSI publications not only brings immense value but also plays a critical role in enhancing workmanship standards throughout the construction industry. The availability of these standards reflects NFRC's broader commitment to maintain high benchmarks within the roofing and cladding sectors, which are often subject to rapid technological advancements and evolving regulatory frameworks.

In conjunction with the standards access, NFRC has also launched a new Personal Medical Insurance (PMI) Scheme, administered by ECIS, aimed at providing members quick access to specialist medical support. This initiative seeks to reduce the impact of sickness and injury on the workforce, ensuring quicker diagnoses and treatment, which ultimately contributes to maintaining productivity levels. Richard Miller remarked on the potential benefits of this scheme, noting, “This will not only increase productivity and reduce absenteeism, it will boost morale by giving the workforce a sense of value.” With over 40 years of experience in supporting construction sector businesses, ECIS is poised to offer significant support to NFRC’s member companies.

These new offerings are part of a broader strategy by NFRC to ensure that its membership benefits are as valuable and relevant as possible. The NFRC provides a diverse range of resources, including access to technical guidance, networking opportunities, and government-backed schemes. Membership also offers a unique seal of approval that enhances visibility and credibility for member companies among clients.

Moreover, NFRC actively contributes to numerous British Standards Institution (BSI) committees, ensuring that its members remain informed about the latest developments within their profession. This level of involvement guarantees that NFRC can provide relevant and timely guidance on essential topics, from health and safety to environmental practices.

As the roofing industry continues to evolve, it is crucial for professionals to leverage such resources to remain competitive. The enhancement of technical competence through access to essential standards, coupled with proactive health management solutions via the PMI Scheme, positions NFRC members to thrive in an increasingly demanding market. NFRC’s ongoing commitment to providing these vital resources exemplifies its role as a cornerstone of support in the roofing industry, fostering both individual and collective advancement.

As the NFRC continues to widen its offerings, members can expect a concerted effort towards creating a more skilled and well-supported workforce, which is essential for addressing the challenges that come with modern construction and roofing demands.
