Klaus-Dieter Axt appointed as new Secretary-General of COCIR to steer European medtech through pivotal era

COCIR has named Klaus-Dieter Axt as its next Secretary-General, aiming to strengthen the organisation's influence and strategic collaborations within the evolving European healthcare and medical technology landscape.

COCIR, the European Trade Association for medical imaging, radiotherapy, health ICT, and electromedical industries, has appointed Klaus-Dieter Axt as its new Secretary-General, marking a significant leadership transition for the organisation. Axt, who will take on his new responsibilities in full by September 2025, comes from EUnited, where he served as Executive Director since January 2021. This leadership change is seen as a pivotal moment for COCIR as it seeks to enhance its influence within the healthcare sector.

The announcement was made by Jan-Willem Scheijgrond, President of COCIR, who expressed gratitude to outgoing Secretary-General Annabel for her impactful leadership during a challenging period. “Her passion and commitment have made COCIR more focused, agile, and impactful,” stated Scheijgrond. He highlighted Annabel's significant contributions, which included refining strategic priorities and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders, ultimately ensuring a more robust voice in research and innovation.

Klaus-Dieter Axt expressed his honour at being entrusted with this leadership role. He stated, “I look forward to engaging with European policymakers, representing our industry’s interests, and contributing to the shared goal of a strong European Health Union.” His experience at EUnited, an organisation that advocates for the engineering sector in Europe, positions him well to navigate the complexities of the healthcare landscape within the Brussels ecosystem.

This transition comes at a critical time for the medical technology industry, which is facing numerous challenges, including technological advancements and regulatory changes. Axt's appointment is expected to enhance COCIR’s ability to represent a diverse set of stakeholders within the healthcare sector effectively. The association's board, which includes leaders from various segments of the medical technology field, underscores its commitment to addressing the industry's evolving needs amidst a rapidly changing environment.

Furthermore, COCIR’s focus on collaboration will be crucial as it strives to align its goals with larger frameworks, such as the ambitions laid out in the European Health Union. This initiative aims to strengthen health systems across EU member states and ensure a more resilient healthcare infrastructure in the face of emerging challenges.

The medical technology sector in Europe has been under increasing scrutiny, with stakeholders calling for greater transparency and accountability. Axt’s experience in advocating for engineering interests could bring a fresh perspective to COCIR’s operational strategies, potentially fostering innovative solutions to the challenges faced by its members.

As he prepares to take on this significant role, Axt will need to engage with various stakeholders, including member companies and European authorities. His efforts will be pivotal in shaping COCIR’s agenda and enhancing the association's relevance in policy discussions that affect the healthcare sector.

Klaus-Dieter Axt's tenure is anticipated to be instrumental in amplifying COCIR's voice in critical policy debates and driving initiatives that support the medical technology industry, especially as digital transformation continues to reshape healthcare delivery.

With this appointment, COCIR moves forward with a renewed sense of purpose and direction, ready to meet the demands of an ever-evolving healthcare landscape while prioritising its members' interests and enhancing its strategic collaborations across Europe.
