Illinois REALTORS® CEO Jeff Baker appointed as 2026 NAR leadership liaison amid growing influence
Illinois REALTORS® CEO Jeff Baker has been appointed the 2026 Association Leadership Liaison for the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), a prestigious role that recognises his significant contributions to the real estate sector. The announcement was made during the recent NAR Legislative Meetings held in Washington, D.C., a pivotal event that gathers industry leaders to discuss key issues affecting the marketplace.
Baker has led Illinois REALTORS® since 2021, bringing a wealth of experience from various roles within the association since 2014. He has served as associate general counsel and deputy CEO, making him only the fourth full-time leader in the organisation's over century-long history. His leadership is characterised by a commitment to addressing critical issues such as housing availability and affordability, areas where he has intensified advocacy efforts both at local and state levels.
The role of an NAR liaison involves acting as a communication bridge between the NAR leadership and its committees, ensuring that these groups operate effectively and pinning down future leaders for these committees. Notably, only 15 candidates are selected annually from among the extensive REALTOR® membership across the country, highlighting the competitive nature of this appointment. As Baker assumes this role, he will be tasked with fostering dialogue and collaboration to further the NAR's missions and strategic goals.
Baker's track record reflects a deep commitment to legislative advocacy, having focused on boosting workforce housing and improving housing stability during his tenure. His approach not only underscores the importance of engaging with policymakers but also points to his dedication to enhancing the overall real estate landscape in Illinois. Under his guidance, the association has been particularly proactive in promoting the state's commercial real estate market to national and international investors, which is essential for its overall economic strength.
Furthermore, the NAR Leadership Academy, which Baker will be associated with, is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the real estate sector. The academy will kick off with an in-person session in Washington, D.C., in January 2026, culminating in graduation at NAR NXT, The REALTOR® Experience in New Orleans later that year. The programme covers a range of topics integral to the industry, including advocacy for homeownership and strategic planning, aligning closely with Baker’s advocacy focus.
This appointment also reflects the increasing recognition of Illinois REALTORS® as a formidable voice within the national association. Just recently, five Illinois REALTORS® were appointed to leadership roles for the 2025 governance year, demonstrating the state’s growing influence in shaping national policies.
In their quest for advancement in real estate, associations like Illinois REALTORS® play a vital role in driving policy that ensures housing remains accessible and affordable. Baker’s new position will undoubtedly amplify his ability to advocate for these issues on a national scale, bolstering support for members and amplifying their collective voice in a challenging market.
As the 2026 NAR Association Leadership Liaison, Jeff Baker is poised to make an impactful mark, navigating the complex landscape of real estate policy while championing the needs of REALTORS® both at the state and national levels.
