IAIS Appoints Gerry Cross as Its Next Secretary General

The global insurance supervisory standard-setter has named its new Secretary General, who joins from the Central Bank of Ireland.

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors, the global standard-setting body for the insurance industry with members from over 200 jurisdictions worldwide, announced on 8 April 2026 the appointment of Gerry Cross as its next Secretary General. Cross will take up the role on 15 June 2026, joining from the Central Bank of Ireland, where he currently serves as Director of Capital Markets and Funds and leads a directorate of 220 staff.

Cross brings nearly 30 years of experience in financial services and regulation to the role. He has held a range of senior positions across EU regulatory bodies, including membership of the Board of Supervisors of the European Banking Authority and alternate membership of the Board of Supervisors of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority. He served on the IAIS Executive Committee from 2019 to 2024. Earlier in his career, Cross held director-level roles at the Association for Financial Markets in Europe in Brussels and the Institute of International Finance in Washington DC.

Cross succeeds Jonathan Dixon, who has served as Secretary General since 2017. Dixon will remain with the association as Special Adviser until August 2026 to support the leadership transition. The IAIS is hosted by the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland.

Toshiyuki Miyoshi, Chair of the IAIS Executive Committee, described Cross as bringing a strong record of leadership, an ability to address challenging issues collaboratively, and a demonstrated commitment to international cooperation. He expressed confidence that under Cross's leadership, the association is well-positioned to continue delivering on its strategic priorities.
