CIPD appoints Neil Carberry as new Chief Executive Officer

New leader to take helm in September after fourteen years under Peter Cheese.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development announced on 16 April that Neil Carberry will join as Chief Executive in September 2026. He succeeds Peter Cheese, who has led the Institute for fourteen years and steps down later in the year.

Carberry joins from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, where he has served as Chief Executive. He currently chairs the CBI's Trade Association Council, giving him a broad view of the trade body landscape in which CIPD operates. Caroline Stockmann steps in as Interim Chief Executive from 8 May, bridging the period until Carberry takes up the role formally.

The appointment closes a long succession process at one of the UK's largest professional bodies for people, work and organisational development, with a global membership and a substantial qualifications and accreditation business behind it.
