Bavarian kAeMu network pioneers free additive manufacturing support for SMEs
The kAeMu network was established in September 2024 with a focus on integrating additive manufacturing (AM) into small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bavaria. The initiative aims to bridge the gap for these companies, many of which have previously faced barriers to accessing practical expertise and technology in industrial 3D printing.
Organised by Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, the project enjoys financial backing from several significant sources, including the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), the European Union, and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts. The support underscores a commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancement within the region.
Additive manufacturing, particularly concerning metals and plastics, is gaining recognition for its potential applications across various sectors, including aviation, energy, medical technology, and machinery manufacturing. Proponents of AM highlight its advantages, such as new design capabilities that allow for complex geometries, alongside potential reductions in material use and shorter production timelines. Despite these benefits, many SMEs express caution when considering the adoption of AM technologies.
Challenges such as uncertainty regarding investment costs and a notable lack of specialised knowledge often hinder SMEs from exploring this innovative manufacturing route. Specific concerns include choosing appropriate components, understanding and evaluating process chains, and conducting thorough economic analyses.
The kAeMu network specifically addresses these issues by providing resources and guidance tailored for those new to additive manufacturing. Participation in the initiative is free, ensuring that all developed content and results are accessible to its members. This open-access approach aims to facilitate sustainable technology transfer, enabling SMEs to confidently engage with and benefit from advancements in additive manufacturing.
