About the Organisation

BEUC is the umbrella group for 45 independent consumer organisations from 32 countries. Our main role is to represent them to the EU institutions and defend the interests of European consumers. Our acronym originates from our French name, ‘Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs’.

Our daily work involves making sure the EU takes policy decisions that improve the lives of consumers. This covers a range of topics including competition, consumer rights, digital rights, energy, redress and enforcement, financial services, food, health, safety, sustainability and trade policy.

About the role

This role is an exciting opportunity to work on EU Competition Law from a consumers’ angle while potentially growing in the organisation. 

Reporting directly to the Manager of Enforcement, Competition and Consumers’ Rights, you will be in charge of supporting BEUC’s work on competition policy and participating in enforcement activities providing the consumer viewpoint in high-profile cases.

Responsibilities

  • Leading work on horizontal and sectoral competition topics, especially in antitrust (Art. 101 and 102 TFUE) and mergers controls,
  • Monitoring and analysis of competition law and policy developments at a European level,
  • Drafting legal documents and submissions to EU and, where relevant, national competition authorities,
  • Drafting responses to public consultations,
  • Supporting other teams on questions related to competition Law,
  • Supporting the enforcement team on the preparation of regulatory complaints and strategic litigation,
  • Managing funded projects through, among others, overseeing budgets, handling the reporting and maintaining good relationships with funders,
  • Supporting the Director General and the Manager of Enforcement, Competition and Consumers’ Rights in the development of campaigns in line with the organizational strategy,
  • Maintaining and developing contacts with representatives of different EU institutions and relevant stakeholders,
  • Duties may evolve according to the development of the team and its activities.

Skills, Competencies & Experience

Required Skills :

  • Lawyer registered with the Brussels Bar (or any bar in a Member State of the European Union, “e-list”) is a preferable,
  • Excellent and fluent communication and presentation skills in English. Knowledge of other EU languages is an asset,
  • A relationship-builder able to process information quickly to develop knowledge, including new or unfamiliar areas of work,
  • A highly organised, structured, strategic and independent professional, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously,

Required Experience: 

  • Relevant experience of 5+ years on competition law in a similar environment (such as NGOs, regulators, EU institution, courts or CJEU, government, company or EU trade association, law firm) with a demonstrable experience in competition litigation and merger control (at national or EU level),

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree) in Law, Competition Law, EU law, or related fields. A specialisation in consumer law would be an advantage

Compensation & Benefits

  • A full-time 24-month employment contract with a competitive package (salary, fringe benefits, extra-legal paid leave, flexible working hours) and the possibility to be renewed

Conditions of employment

  • As our contracts are subject to Belgian law, candidates must be committed to official registration in Belgium

Working locations

  • Working from our Brussels office. We offer teleworking possibilities from home or abroad, subject to our remote working policy and organisational needs.
