Creating effective board/secretariat relations

Gain practical advice, new ideas and key insights to improve your organisation, services & products.

You can get the strategy right, hire the right people, and develop effective processes: but if the relationship between the board and secretariat is not healthy, then your association won't function properly. In this seminar, we will look at how to optimise this relationship; while also focusing on how to improve governance standards at an association, and how to create trust and cooperation within an association.

Unveiling clues to successful leadership: the virtuous circle of diversity, dialogue and cooperation
Christian Feichtinger International Astronautical Federation

For more than 70 years, the resounding success of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), recognized as the world’s leading space advocacy body, has been rooted in a culture of organizational trust and dialogue, and relations of constructive cooperation with all stakeholders.

The structure of the IAF is built on organization norms around collaboration and interaction which have triggered the virtuous circle of inclusion and accountability, and leveraged the Federation’s outcomes, commitment and resilience over the past years. The IAF values excellence, diversity and integrity at all levels, and operates daily with the relentless work of the IAF Bureau and the IAF Secretariat which is the starting point for all IAF activities.

During his presentation, IAF Executive Director Dr. Christian Feichtinger, will navigate you through the IAF organizational structure and will also share the best practices to master governance of organizations such as the IAF.

Fixing a broken board/secretariat relationship
Monica Fontana, European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association

The management of Associations is very similar to commercial companies but the leadership-secretariat relations are extremely different and at times challenging. The decision making is a full task of the board while most of the responsibility of making sure that the decisions taken by the board are implemented are of the staff. We will try to explore some scenarios and give some tips of how to resolve difficult, and at times conflicting, situations.
