British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK. It is prominent and influential at the heart of the current debate over the future of healthcare provision. The BMA speaks for doctors at all stages of their careers and is a leading voice on a wide range of professional and political issues affecting medicine and health.

The policy directorate's critical function is ensuring that the BMA leads debates on the range of public health, healthcare, and workforce issues. Equally critical is ensuring that our committees and internal structures work effectively and dynamically.The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) is the only body that represents all GPs in the UK. It deals with all matters affecting NHS GPs, regardless of BMA membership.

About the role

The Head of Committee Secretariat plays a central leadership role in the governance and operational support of an organization’s formal committees and advisory bodies. This position is responsible for ensuring the effective administration, coordination, and strategic alignment of committee functions with the broader goals of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a high-performing team to ensure the successful delivery of committee outcomes.
  • Research and draft reports for the committee
  • Accountable for the committee's budget
  • Oversee support for committee meetings, away days, and conferences
  • Ensure the smooth running of meetings, providing secretariat support
  • Accountable for the committee's annual work plan
  • Work with members and colleagues across the policy directorate to develop and implement policy as well as providing strategic advice to committees on policy issues within their remit.

  • Experience working with and managing committees
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Influencing skills with the ability to resolve conflicts
  • Experience in the development of open and evidence-based policy
  • Team management experience
  • Ability to grasp new concepts quickly
  • Ability to build effective relationships
  • Ability to work flexibly and have the practical aptitude to think quickly and respond to demands in a positive manner
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the medical profession are desirable.
