ICC and UA forge new partnership to enhance North American plumbing and mechanical trades
On April 15, 2025, the International Code Council (ICC) formalised an agreement with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA). This partnership aims to enhance collaboration in the plumbing, mechanical, and fuel gas industries, reflecting a shared commitment to the skilled trades workforce.
The UA, which comprises approximately 384,000 professionals such as plumbers, pipefitters, sprinkler fitters, HVACR service technicians, welders, and pipeliners, is a prominent representative in the construction sector across North America.
Through this collaboration, the ICC aims to strengthen the foundation of codes and standards related to plumbing and mechanical works, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the industry. By joining forces, both organisations will focus on training the next generation of skilled workers in plumbing, pipefitting, and mechanical contracting. Key aspects of the agreement include advocating for improved plumbing infrastructure aimed at safeguarding public health.
John Belcik, Chief Executive Officer of the ICC, remarked, “This collaborative effort reflects the Code Council’s deep understanding of the critical role skilled labor plays in shaping safe, sustainable and resilient communities.” He emphasised that the partnership is a testament to their shared mission to enhance codes and standards, support safety, and nurture a thriving workforce that aligns with the future of the industry.
Mark McManus, General President of the UA, highlighted the expertise of their members, stating, “The men and women of the United Association are the best-trained and most highly skilled craftspeople in the world, and we are proud to work each day to protect the health of our nations.” He expressed pride in the collaboration with the ICC, asserting that it will help uphold the high standards necessary to maintain safe and healthy communities.
Overall, this agreement signifies a concerted effort to reinforce the plumbing and mechanical sectors while ensuring that the interests and voices of those in the industry are represented in the governing codes and standards. The collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing the needs of the ever-evolving workforce and infrastructure demands in North America.
