About the Organisation

 Forces Pension Society is a not-for-profit, independent membership organisation that looks after the interests of current and future recipients of a UK Armed Forces pension. It is a watchdog, a lobby group, and a provider of professional guidance to its membership, which comprises both serving and retired Armed Forces personnel. In recent years, the Society has gone from strength to strength, with increasing membership (now over 66,500), a strong independent voice, and considerable influence and reputation. The Society has a full-time staff based in Vauxhall, South West London, and is supported by associates.

About the role

The Membership Team is the gateway to the Society. It is responsible for membership planning, communications and events, answering general enquiries, and analysing membership data to shape the Society’s offer. It has a strong customer service focus.
The Member Communications Officer supports the Head of Membership in the development and delivery of effective communications with FPS members.

The role is central to enhancing the member experience, improving engagement and satisfaction, supporting retention, and promoting the value of Society membership throughout the member lifecycle. This post will also help to ensure that member communication strategies are aligned with the Society’s broader goals and reflect the evolving needs of its diverse membership base.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver regular communications, including newsletters, announcements, and event updates.
  • Act as a first point of contact for member enquiries, ensuring a smooth and helpful experience.
  • Maintain accurate member records and support data integrity within the CRM system.
  • Monitor and analyse member engagement and feedback to inform communications strategy.
  • Support targeted campaigns to engage, retain, and grow membership.
  • Create clear, engaging content tailored to different members' needs and communication channels.
  • Contribute to the production and delivery of Society publications, including Pennant and e-newsletters.
  • Assist in planning and delivering member events and supporting two-way engagement.
  • Prepare engagement reports for internal use and governance.
  • Carry out other tasks as directed by the Head of Membership.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to different audiences.
  • An excellent command of written English.
  • Brilliant organisation and time management, with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Reliable self-starter with imagination and initiative.
  • Energy and drive to define and develop a new role.
  • Confident problem-solver with sound judgement.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with members and stakeholders.
  • Skilled at simplifying complex information for clear, engaging content.
  • Digitally literate, with experience using social media and communication tools.
  •  High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Collaborative team player with a proactive approach.
  • Ability to confidently respond to incoming enquiries from members.
  • Strong understanding of what good engagement and customer service look like and how to deliver this.
  • Proficient with the full Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understanding of Social Media sites: X, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Understanding of and interest in HM Forces and credibility when dealing with its members.
  • Experience with CRMs, mass email systems and Adobe is an advantage.
  • Practical knowledge and experience of updating and managing CRM and similar systems, and using data to identify trends.
  • Experience working within a membership organisation, not-for-profit, similar environment.
  • Experience supporting events, either in-person or virtual, including planning, promotion, and delivery.
  • Competence in basic design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) for producing visual content.
  • Understanding of segmentation and personalisation in communication strategies.
  • Awareness of data protection and GDPR principles in a communications context.
  • Further education/ qualification in communications, marketing or a related field.

Required Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
