BEUC collaborates with other international consumer organizations and stakeholders to strengthen consumer advocacy globally. It is also a key player in building a consumer-friendly digital and sustainable economy in Europe. Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs (BEUC), the European Consumer Organisation, is an umbrella group representing consumer organizations across Europe. Founded in 1962, BEUC promotes and defends European consumers' rights by advocating for policies and legislation that improve consumer protection and well-being.
About the role
The Communications Officer at BEUC (The European Consumer Organisation) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and impact of the organization's work to promote consumer rights across Europe. This position is central to creating, coordinating, and executing communication strategies that engage a diverse audience, including policymakers, stakeholders, and the general public.
Responsibilities
- Pitching news stories, maintaining contacts with relevant journalists, responding to media requests, and drafting press reactions.
- Seizing communications opportunities to voice BECU's advocacy messages and advising policy colleagues;
- Developing and implementing campaigns with our member organizations;
- Writing and editing publications such as factsheets, website texts, and position papers;
- Coordinating the production of publications and other communication material with external suppliers;
- Support horizontal communications tasks where needed and proactively bring ideas to improve BECU's communications work.
- Helping with the organization of events.
Skills, Competencies & Experience
- 3 years of relevant work experience
- Background in communication, two years of relevant professional experience in press work, ideally with some established media contacts;
- Experience in using a broad range of communication tools and applying them in target-specific situations;
- Understanding, appreciating, and articulating the consumer interest;
- Creative and like to brainstorm with colleagues to develop new ideas;
- Good knowledge of the EU institutions and their political decision-making process is an asset.
- English native-level language skills are essential; second, EU language is an advantage.
- First-class written and verbal communication skills.
- Ready to translate policy texts into non-expert language;
- Team player, dynamic, and eager to take up new challenges;
- Motivated to work with people from diverse backgrounds
