Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) is the professional body for speech and language therapists across the UK. The RCSLT has over 22,000 members and employs around 65 staff, predominantly based in a London office. The RCSLT also has offices in Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff.
Our mission is to improve the lives of people with communication and swallowing needs by facilitating and promoting research, producing guidance, holding events, and influencing government. We aim to promote better education and training for speech and language therapists and provide information to our members and the public about speech and language therapy.
About the role
The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) is seeking an Assistant Content and Engagement Officer who will play an essential role in helping the organisation build its relationship with its members through the creation of content and resources.
The Assistant Content and Engagement Officer plays a vital role in supporting the RCSLT by assisting with the production of top-quality content, tailored resources, and information across print and digital channels. In this role, you’ll use your strong editorial and organisational skills to help produce our award-winning members’ magazine, Bulletin, as well as other member communications, such as our fortnightly e-newsletter and our online blog, SLT Voices. You will manage our magazine peer review group and collaborate with internal experts. You’ll also contribute to supporting the wider content team and colleagues across the RCSLT with your expertise in content, editorial processes, and brand guidelines.
You’ll take the lead in coordinating production workflows and providing essential editorial support to a small creative team. Your attention to detail and excellent writing skills will be key when proofreading, editing or creating content, whether for print, social media, our website, or communications campaigns. Above all, you’ll help ensure our content is consistently high quality, engaging, and valuable to our members.
Responsibilities
Main Responsibilities:
- Support the production of Bulletin magazine, providing administrative, production, and editorial assistance to the editor, including:
- Managing the submissions process, including liaising with authors, setting deadlines, and working with authors.
- Managing the peer review process, developing strong relationships with clinical experts and wider RCSLT staff, and troubleshooting when required.
- Reviewing, researching, editing, and rewriting content for the magazine and website.
- Proofreading the magazine to ensure a high-quality end product.
- Taking ownership of selected magazine sections, including book reviews and journal highlights.
- Leading on magazine production processes, including supplying content to publishers and managing the advertisement approval process.
- Post-production, including archiving files and publishing online content.
Other:
- Work with the Content team to produce regular high-quality articles for our online blog platform SLT Voices, including interviewing, writing, and editing articles, and working with members to develop content.
- Responsible for the fortnightly e-newsletter to members, as well as providing ad hoc support to colleagues in other teams to edit and build additional e-newsletters.
- Work with the content team to manage queries from across RCSLT through a joint team mailbox.
- Use WordPress CMS to update the RCSLT website with news, blogs, and information
Skills, Competencies & Experience
Experience:
- Using an editorial style guide and brand guidelines.
- Researching and editing content.
- Proofreading.
- Writing for different audiences.
- Managing processes, setting and meeting deadlines.
- Ideally working in a member or consumer-facing role and able to work with people from a range of professional backgrounds, as well as service users.
Skills and Abilities:
- Editorial ability and attention to detail.
- Deadline focused and able to prioritise conflicting demands.
- Able to learn how to use technology such as online task management tools, CRM, CMS, and Microsoft applications.
- Ideally, understand the communication challenges of a membership organisation.
- Ideally have knowledge of principles of accessibility in print and online.
