Job description

This role reports into the Head of Events and works closely with the Commercial Director and Head of Commercial Partnerships. The CBI Senior Conference Event Manager will be responsible for delivering large-scale conferences in London and across the UK. This role will work closely with colleagues from across the whole organisation to deliver the CBI Conference Series programme.

Key Responsibilities

Conference Programme Development

  • Lead the development and creation of compelling, content-led conference programmes, that offer practical advice and guidance to delegates (both paying and non-paying), sponsors and speakers
  • Conduct research with CBI members and Account Managers to identify the key challenges businesses face;
  • Work with colleagues to identify CBI content relevant to those key challenges;
  • Create content-led half-day and one-day conference programmes, that provide a coherent narrative and attract attendees for the entire event;

Speaker management

  • Identify high-level, influential speakers from our member organisations and across business and politics;
  • Manage the invitation and confirmation process;
  • Update conference promotional materials;
  • Write speaker briefing notes and co-ordinate speaker briefings;
  • Provide onsite speaker management;
  • Create content-led event communication and information copy that will be used for promotion, speaker invitations, briefing documents and other communication channels;
  • Conduct competitor research and analysis on key topics, themes and event pricing; 

Conference Planning and Delivery

  • Project manage the delivery of each conference, including detailed project plans, communication plans and budgets;
  • Venue sourcing, negotiation and delivery;
  • Work with Marketing, Sponsorship and Account Managers to ensure that delegate numbers and commercial targets are met;
  • Develop and enhance relations with external suppliers, venues, competitors and other organisations;
  • Provide weekly reports to Head of Events and Commercial Director on all aspects of the CBI Conference Series, including updates on speaker invitations, venue confirmations, registration numbers and progress against commercial targets;


  • Work closely with the Head of Commercial Partnerships and Sponsorship Managers to identify sponsorship opportunities within the CBI Conference Series and support the plan to exploit them;
  • Participate in pitch presentations to stakeholders to articulate conference objectives;


  • Ensure all large commercial events have a communications plan, identifying key marketing opportunities which can enhance CBI profile and that of our sponsors/partners;
  • Ensure each conference follows the CBI Strategic Project Process, to ensure event marketing campaigns follow the correct lead-times;

Knowledge & Experience

  • What an individual must know or understand to be able to fulfil the role’s requirements
  • Able to demonstrate at least 5 years’ experience of event management
  • Able to demonstrate experience of delivering high profile complex events for 1000 plus delegates
  • Excellent knowledge of the B2B events market
  • Experience leading and managing a team
  • Experience of managing budgets and analysis of event data
