Job description

The Nuclear Institute is the professional membership body and learned society for the nuclear industry. The Nuclear Institute conducts educational and outreach activities, organises events and conferences, produces a respected industry journal, and supports professionalism within the industry and of our members. The Nuclear Institute works closely with other organisations, as well as the Engineering and Science Councils and Society for the Environment which licence the Nuclear Institute to register professionals as Chartered Engineers, Scientists and Environmentalists as well as other grades of registration. The Nuclear Institute has over 3,000 members, a small staff team of 5 people and around 400 volunteers. The nuclear industry is a growing and exciting place to be for anyone interested in helping to achieve a low carbon world and mitigate climate change.

Role description

The successful candidate will be responsible for promotion of the Nuclear Institute, the professional body for the nuclear industry, to members, potential members, employers and the public. You will create and implement marketing campaigns for membership, events and more across the NI’s digital platforms, and creation of promotional materials for distribution both digitally and via print. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has some marketing experience, is highly self-motivated and is keen to develop a role towards management level.

Main duties include

Serving the NI and its members
  • Running marketing campaigns through our website, newsletters, social media, branches and all other channels to promote membership, professionalism, events and journal subscriptions.
  • Provide practical marketing support to NI’s communities – branches, SIGs and the YGN.
  • Providing regular marketing analysis reports to inform the CEO and trustees.
  • Author the monthly NI newsletter and monitor success of campaigns.
  • Develop and manage the NI website, making sure it is kept up-to-date and writing new content across the site to constantly add value and improve user experience.
  • Act as secretary to the Editorial Committee including liaison with both the Technical and General Editors.
  • Proofread each issue of the Nuclear Future journal and provide our publishing company with mailing data.
  • Attendance at major NI and other events, conferences and exhibitions to promote the NI. This will involve occasional UK travel (not more than 1-2 days per month).
  • Attendance at online webinars, AGMs etc as required.
Promoting membership and events
  • Manage marketing materials and NI branded merchandise including liaising with designers to deliver new materials and ensuring appropriate levels of stock are held centrally and by NI branches and networks
  • Develop and implement marketing plans for NI conferences and events including analysis of results.
  • Develop case studies, profiles, video content etc to promote membership of the NI and its aims and objectives.
  • Contribute to overall NI business planning
  • Manage the marketing budget including signing off relevant invoices
  • Other tasks to support NI operations as requested.

Key skills

  • Strong marketing background and evidence of delivery
  • Ability to manage concurrent projects to deadlines
  • Ability to take ownership of the marketing function with minimal oversight
  • A very high expectation of the quality of the finished product
  • Excellent IT, written and verbal communications skills with the ability to learn, assimilate and reproduce content about the sector in which we work
  • Experience of creating and updating content.
  • Experience of a range of standard marketing tools such as Mailchimp, CMS, Canva, Adobe, SurveyMonkey, Vimeo, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.
  • Committee minuting and servicing.
  • Experience of writing promotional materials
  • Experience of producing short video content
  • Experience of working within a membership organisation
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Special requirements

There could be occasional travel and occasional out of hours working.


This position is entirely home-based. Occasional team meetings in person will be arranged which could be in London or elsewhere.
