There are restaurants, bars, shops and traditional commerce, still very present at the village; there is the connection to the sea, the roots of a land which also belongs to the fishermen and the bay from where boats leave for high seas every day; and then there are the streets and alleys of the center, the fortress, museums and gardens. The sum of all this makes a very rich and beautiful historical center frenetic, by day or by night.

MAAT - Meusea de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, a museum that is one the futuristic buildings of the capital. Opened in 2016, this museum joins a state-of-the-art building, with signature of Amanda Levete Architects studio, famous for its roof converted into one of the city's viewpoints, and Central Tejo, a former power plant in a 20th-century industrial building, worth of a lengthy visit.

In general, the climate is excellent and there are no extreme temperatures, but there are marked differences between various areas, with warmer, drier weather on the southern slopes of the Sintra Mountains than elsewhere. The Local Climate is Atlantic and therefore mild all year round. The average temperature is 18 ºC in spring, with few rainy days and nearly 2.500 hours of sunshine per year.
AWC 2019 will reflect Gothenburg’s high ambitions on sustainability – socially, environmentally and economically. Sustainability efforts will contribute to the sustainable development of large congresses and meetings, the development and promotion of the meeting industry, as well as the development and promotion of Gothenburg as an innovative destination and a city that leads the way in sustainability.
Sustainability initiatives add quality and contribute to the experience of the congress, and should therefore be active, systematic and integrated. To achieve our objectives we must demonstrate responsible leadership and innovative thinking, and promote sustainable development. This work will be managed in an ethically and legally correct manner and will comply with all relevant laws, agreements and requirements.
The basic requirements for the success of sustainability efforts for AWC 2019 are that:
- Employees, top management and partners have adequate knowledge and tools to integrate sustainability into their daily work
- A management system that supports sustainability, the Swedish Environmental Base Event Standard, that is implemented and certified by a third party
- Stakeholders are involved and encouraged to take part and commit to sustainability efforts.
Five focus areas have been identified in addition to the central ambition and efforts to minimise the negative impact of the congress on people and the environment.
1. The climate challenge
AWC will actively strive to minimise the climate emissions of the congress. Because many visitors come from Europe and the rest of the world, many of them will probably choose air travel. Therefore we will recommend airport coaches from airport to the exhibition & congress centre
2. Food & drink
AWC will offer a sustainable and varied selection of food and beverages.
3. Management of resources and waste
AWC will minimise environmental impact by managing resources and waste carefully and considerately.
4. Welcoming, considerate and inclusive
AWC will be welcoming and accessible to everyone in the meeting industry.
In the short term and long term, AWC will deliver positive effects for Gothenburg and the meeting industry – internationally, nationally, regionally and locally. All stakeholders should feel that the congress has delivered more added value than expected
