Current Forecast
Sustainability efforts

AWC 2019 will reflect Gothenburg’s high ambitions on sustainability – socially, environmentally and economically. Sustainability efforts will contribute to the sustainable development of large congresses and meetings, the development and promotion of the meeting industry, as well as the development and promotion of Gothenburg as an innovative destination and a city that leads the way in sustainability.

Sustainability initiatives add quality and contribute to the experience of the congress, and should therefore be active, systematic and integrated. To achieve our objectives we must demonstrate responsible leadership and innovative thinking, and promote sustainable development. This work will be managed in an ethically and legally correct manner and will comply with all relevant laws, agreements and requirements.

The basic requirements for the success of sustainability efforts for AWC 2019 are that:

  • Employees, top management and partners have adequate knowledge and tools to integrate sustainability into their daily work
  • A management system that supports sustainability, the Swedish Environmental Base Event Standard, that is implemented and certified by a third party
  • Stakeholders are involved and encouraged to take part and commit to sustainability efforts.

Five focus areas have been identified in addition to the central ambition and efforts to minimise the negative impact of the congress on people and the environment.

1. The climate challenge

AWC will actively strive to minimise the climate emissions of the congress. Because many visitors come from Europe and the rest of the world, many of them will probably choose air travel. Therefore we will recommend airport coaches from airport to the exhibition & congress centre

2. Food & drink

AWC will offer a sustainable and varied selection of food and beverages.

3. Management of resources and waste

AWC will minimise environmental impact by managing resources and waste carefully and considerately.

4. Welcoming, considerate and inclusive

AWC will be welcoming and accessible to everyone in the meeting industry.

5. Legacy

In the short term and long term, AWC will deliver positive effects for Gothenburg and the meeting industry – internationally, nationally, regionally and locally. All stakeholders should feel that the congress has delivered more added value than expected
