Membership organisations and associations hold large amounts of data about their members, partners, stakeholders and contacts, yet often don’t consider the impact of a cyber-attack on their reputation and finances, even more than a year after GDPR came into force. Moreover, membership organisations and associations that hold large-scale events may be targeted as the nature of live events often makes them a very attractive option for a cyber-attack. Very worryingly it was reported that during this year’s Infosecurity Europe event that of the 401 exhibitors present, just 13% had executed DMARC protection successfully to stop potential phishing emails at the gateway. The risk of a cyber-attack at live events is as large as it is real.

With only 13% of businesses setting cyber security standards for their suppliers, protecting against cyber-attacks has never been more important for membership organisations and suppliers. Delegates will learn about:

•    The various types of cyber-attacks.
•    Why the growing cyber threat should be taken seriously by membership organisations and associations.
•    Practical things you can do to protect your membership organisation or association from cyber-attacks.
•    Why you should consider accreditations such as Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus.
•    The benefits of cyber security insurance.

Managing your board is one of the key challenges for an association CEO.  A poorly operating board can suck the resources from an association and stunt its development, not to mention drive the CEO crazy!  This session will cover all that can go wrong with a board and how to fix it from the basic to the more complex, including:

  • The ideal make up of an association board
  • Keeping the board strategically focussed not operational
  • Attracting the right people to the role
  • Why subcommittees don’t work
  • Controlling disruptive elements
  • Setting the agenda for short focussed meetings
  • Managing the relationship between CEO and board members

Speakers

Rennie Schafer

Chief Executive Officer
Federation of European Self Storage Associations

As part of a program to ensure the ongoing success of UK Finance, it is vital to ensure that the membership is in step with the changes that are occurring across the sector. These are often sanctioned by a supervisory or regulatory body, but based on the ever-changing financial services landscape. Digital disintermediation, new market entrants empowered by new regulations, the rise of FinTech’s and hybrid business models all result in an industry that is fast changing in terms of market participants.  How has the association has responded to these factors in their membership strategy and approach.

  • What are the new business models and organisation types that are creating challenges to the status quo
  • Avoiding bias from other members and colleagues when presented with applications by non-traditional organisations
  • What aspects of the value proposition must be considered and reviewed to reflect these changes
  • The assimilation of new style members with longer-term members with different organisational cultures, styles and objectives
  • Adapting individual workstreams to accurately represent and service the changing membership
  • Reviewing the fee structure so that new business model or lower resource model organisations are not disadvantaged
  • Acting collaboratively, within the membership criteria, to share value to a wider and more contemporary financial community
